individual ceramics Here are some examples to show the variety in Roger's work.

| | Roger's present studio was opened in 1986 and the main area of his work now springs from a fascination for the images, patterns and shapes found in what he calls "natural water".
He is particularly interested in the movement, colours and texture of water and on its influence on the life that lives in and around it.
This results in various vessel forms, which express variations and abstractions on the observed moment or theme. The pieces are often quite large, sometimes incised and/or with modelling and painting. |
| | The work is not intended as a piece of natural history - but rather that the observation may be caught, resolved and be used to create a successful piece of ceramics able to work in its own terms.
Frequently, Roger uses several sponged layers of vitreous slips and various matt and dry glazes. These bleed up through one another, during the high and lengthy firing process, to give a sense of depth to the surface.
Current images being used include swimming fishes, newts, lobsters, etc. All set in a context derived from Roger's original observations. He is also working on a group of pots based on ideas derived from the movement itself. | |
| | | All the work is once-fired in an increasingly reducing atmosphere to about cone 11 (above 1300 degrees).
These examples are all 'individual' in nature, but Roger can make 'similar' work whilst he can find variation in the theme.
Do contact him if you are interested. Particular commissions are welcome. |
