Large jar "shoal of tropical fish"
|
| The main area of my work springs from a fascination for the images, patterns and shapes found in 'natural water'.
I am particularly interested in the movement, colours and texture of water and on its influence on the life that lives in and around it. The use of fish, for example is a strong theme in my work - simply because they cannot help but to describe movement and rhythm.
The work is not intended as a piece of natural history - but rather that the observation may be caught, resolved and be used to make a piece of ceramics able to work on its own terms. I often use several sponged layers of vitreous slips and various matt and dry glazes. These bleed up through one another, during the high-temperature and lengthy firing process, to give a sense of depth to the surface.
Sometimes, as shown here, gold or platinum lustres are used to suggest the effects of light on surfaces etc
All the work is once-fired in an increasingly reducing atmosphere to about cone 11 (above 1300 degrees).

| | Here are some more examples of recently made pieces. Some are quite large; some have been commissioned recently and some form part of my current stream of work.
Naturally, they are all 'individual' in nature.
Do have a look in the selling GALLERY section. |
